Five go wild on the World

The New Zealand family of 5 go travelling freestyle around Europe and the USA for 8 months.

Our mobile home was near Pont Aven, a lovely little town on a river. We were also near the port of Quimper where I had camped with my family as a toddler (though I don't recall it). We did drives around the area but also did a bot of unwinding and caught up on some reading. The French certainly preserve their heritage and old towns very well and on the whole graffiti and vandalism was rare. The roads are good and uncrowded (unlike Britain) and drivers were some of the best we encountered in terms of consideration and speed (also unlike Britain). Throughout Europe all the major motorways are toll paying and the tolls are very pricey at about $30 NZ per 150kms. Of course you can take the less direct roads which we often did but on the days when we had a lot of distance to cover we took the toll roads. Because of the high tolls the motorways are not crowded and driving is pleasant. There are no traffic jams and few roadworks again due to the high tolls. Also the service areas are generally better when you need to relieve yourself in a hurry. The public toilets in France are APPALLING and yet the rest of the country is so well kept. We got used to taking our own toilet paper and teaching the kids how to squat! If you are lucky enough to even find a public toilet, it is either filthy or you need to pay by putting a 50c ($1 NZ) coin in the door so it will open and even this does not guarantee a better standard. At one point I was so desperate I got Tim to pull over and hoofed it up into the shrubbery to find a private spot (something I might add that was a first for me) only to find the ground littered with bits of toilet paper blowing all over the place! Obviously I was not the first person to lament the lack of good public toilets in this country. It is also a common site while driving to see men standing at the side of the road publicly peeing on to the grass verges. Again I can now understand why!
